Why are some people faster than others

There are two main reasons why some people are faster than others: genetics and practice.

Genetics: Our genes influence our muscle composition, with two main types of muscle fibers: fast-twitch and slow-twitch.  Fast-twitch fibers contract quickly and with a lot of power, ideal for short bursts of speed like sprinting. Slow-twitch fibers are better for sustained activity, like long-distance running. People who inherit more fast-twitch muscle fibers will naturally have an advantage in activities requiring speed.

Practice: Even with the best genes, practice is essential for maximizing speed. Training improves your body's efficiency in using energy, strengthens your muscles, and develops better coordination.  Proper technique also plays a big role.  For example, runners can improve their speed by working on their stride length and foot strike.

These two factors work together. Genetics set a kind of ceiling on your potential speed, but practice determines how close you get to reaching that ceiling.
